Police are now appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage following the collision on the A19 near Escrick which involved a blue Volkswagen Golf and a silver Volvo XC90 at 1am.
Both drivers sustained minor injuries in the accident.
The road was closed for scene investigations to be carried out, and for the vehicles involved to be recovered.
Fire crews from York and Acomb attended the scene at 1.16 am. A spokesman for the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the people were out of the vehicles when crews arrived.
Police want to hear from any witnesses to the collision, anyone who may have seen the vehicles before the collision, or anyone with relevant dashcam footage.
Please email david.ellison@northyorkshire.police.uk if you can help. Alternatively, you can call North Yorkshire Police on 101 and ask for TC41 Dave Ellison.
