A LARGE city centre chain has pledged its support for the local community by opening up free bike parking inside its shop.

Evans Cycles in Coney Street has opened the doors on a new free and secure bicycle storage area, which is intended to make it easier for people to travel into the city by bike over car.

The cycle park, which is open from 9am to 5pm and located on the top floor of their shop, allows bikes to be held on a first come first served basis for up to 48hrs at no charge – giving people a safe and secure alternative to the city’s bike racks.

Store manager Ryan Finnie explained that whilst Evans Cycles is a national company, their staff are all York locals who wanted to ‘give something back’ and understand the issue with bike thefts in the city.

In the most recent figures reported by The Press, York had a total 925 bike thefts in 2023 – 422 higher than Cambridge City Centre, which is said to have the highest level of cycling in the UK.

Ryan said: “I actually don’t cycle some of my nicer bikes into the city, because it’s too risky.

“Ultimately, we have this room that we don’t use, so we can use it encourage people to cycle into the city centre. It’s not the most glitzy place, but it’s safe for people to keep their bikes.”
