The Volunteer Arms in Watson Street, Holgate, has been recognised by York CAMRA as the group’s City Pub of the Season for Summer.
Karl Smith, who choose the pub, says the ‘Vollies’ is a great example” of such street corner pubs that used to be commonplace before so many closed.
Karl, who is also organising this month’s York CAMRA beer festival, says ‘The Vollies’ is the last remaining pub from the terraced area that traditionally housed railway workers.
The pub was previously owned by Punch Taverns, who believed the venue was uneconomic as a pub, but in 2011 the venue was saved by the Crossman Group, who also operate the Slip Inn and the Swan off Bishopthorpe Road.
