Adam Davis, then 22, disregarded warnings from his passenger to slow down, had barely slept and had cannabis in his body when he raced round a blind bend on the wrong side of the road,
said Rachael Landis, prosecuting.
He crashed head-on into a Land Rover Discovery with two grandparents inside on their way to a garden centre before meeting friends in Fulford.
The grandmother feared she and her husband were about to die when Davis’ Polo suddenly appeared in front of them on the country road near Sherburn-in-Elmet.
Both suffered long-term major injuries that left them dependent on help from family, neighbours and friends. Davis’ passenger ended up in intensive care with major injuries.
The Recorder of York, Judge Sean Morris, told Davis had the grandparents been in a less sturdy car they could have been killed.
“You were driving like an idiot," he said. "You were driving so fast you went round a bend on the wrong side of the road.
“Young men in hot rods (cars) flying around North Yorkshire have to know, if you drive like that, you go down,” he said.
