Jim Mee is the founder of Rat Race, based in York, the UK’s leading provider of global adventure challenges, offering people the chance to tick off once-in-a-lifetime experiences in some of the world’s most remote and exhilarating locations.
Now the 47-year-old, who lives in Thirsk and set up his company 21 years ago, is taking on a solo kayaking expedition across the entire width of the British Isles, from the Humber Estuary on the east coast of England to the west coast of Ireland.
Jim, is a true modern-day explorer whose passion for travel has taken him to 86 countries and counting - he’s set to hit 100 by the end of next year.
This challenge, a 1,000km, three-week self-powered journey using rivers, estuaries, canals, and sea routes, including the challenge of kayaking across the Irish Sea - 100km of open water - is a personal adventure – but it’s also a fundraiser for Children with Cancer UK, Rat Race’s official charity, with a target of £10,000.
I will set off with my kayak from the east coast of England and make my way on a ‘Through Route’ across the entire British Isles, paddling ‘from right to left’ across England, Wales and Ireland," said Jim.
"My journey will use Britain and Ireland’s unique tapestry of estuaries, rivers, canals and the sea, to stitch together a paddling route that spans over 900km on an unbroken journey.
