North Yorkshire Police said officers are at the scene of a crash involving a car and a motorcycle, at junction 47 of the A1(M) and A59 - Allerton Park - on the bridge over the motorway.
A force spokesperson said the road is likely to be closed for some time, and traffic will be extremely heavy.
Road users are advised by police to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.
Traffic is said to be slowing westbound as it passes the scene.
National Highways is reporting that lanes are closed at the A1M northbound at junction 47 the event is expected to clear mid-morning today (July 9).
