Assistant coroner Gillian Kane said there is a “risk that future deaths could occur unless action is taken” by the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
A trust spokesperson said it acknowledges the coroner’s recommendations and “fully accepts” the “need for further action”, adding: “We will be setting out our action plan and implementation timetable to meet the coroner’s deadline, and a full response will be shared with the coroner in due course.”
Ms Kane wrote to the trust over the death of Joanne Stones, 53, at Scarborough Hospital on September 17, 2023.
The coroner, in her report, said Ms Stones had a “complex medical history” and had been taken to Scarborough Hospital by ambulance on September 16, 2023.
Ms Kane said Ms Stones had been admitted to hospital with a suspected inflamed gallbladder.
Hospital staff had been “pre-alerted” ahead of Ms Stones’ arrival as paramedics were “concerned about her condition”, the coroner said.
Her report said Ms Stones was initially put into the hospital’s first assessment area then endured a wait of more than two hours before being moved to its resuscitation department.
