Jason Rhodes, 34, alleged that Ian Franklin ran towards him and Greg Marshall, 35
with a machete in the street and in a separate incident shortly afterwards both Franklin and his partner “flew out” of their side gate with knives in their hands and attacked Mr Marshall, who was unarmed.
He claimed there had been an incident between the Franklin couple and Mr Marshall and his wife outside Monkton Road shops some days earlier.
And he claimed that minutes before the violence, Mr Marshall had punched Franklin’s partner to the ground in Roche Avenue.
When he gave evidence, Franklin claimed Mr Marshall punched his partner to the ground in his garden, not the street, and he had tried to go to her help, but had been confronted by Mr Marshall, who was armed.
