The woman survived.
Aaron Wood, 44, turned down hospital treatment, drank to excess and was addicted to painkilling drugs, said Rachael Landin, prosecuting at York Crown Court.
He made unfounded and unjustified claims the woman was having an affair, pushed a cushion onto her face and threatened to wrap a dog lead round her neck
She told police later she had “no idea how far the defendant would go”.
He had been behaving and continued to behave so erratically for months that she felt life was like constantly “walking on eggshells”.
When she finally ended the relationship he then deluged her with up to 76 phone calls a day.
In a personal statement, she said: “I feel like he has destroyed my life” and that Wood had showed “no remorse” for what he had done to her.
