Thomas Plant, 23, hit the woman as she was driving, throttled her twice and kicked her with his work boots so hard she fell backways through a doorway, said Jemima Stepheson, prosecuting.
He had controlled her behaviour, dictating who her friends were, whom she could speak to, and checking on her phone.
He had said “as a man he could do what he wants,” the prosecution barrister told York Crown Court.
After the violence, he texted the woman saying: “You won’t get anyone as good as me.”
The Recorder of York, Judge Sean Morris, told Plant the violence was “persistent, it was prolonged, it was barbaric”.
“Violence against women is endemic and it has to stop,” he said.
“Your offending is so disgraceful and so appalling, only an immediate prison sentence can be justified. The public would be appalled if you were to be released on a suspended sentence.”
He jailed Plant for 20 months and made him subject to a seven-year restraining order banning him from contacting the woman or going near her home or place of work.
