Prolific York Shoplifter Jailed After String of Thefts

North Yorkshire Police, News

A York shoplifter has been jailed for 16 weeks after stealing laundry products from two city stores in quick succession.

Luke Michael David Pearson, 33, of no fixed address, targeted Sainsbury’s on Scarcroft Road on 12 September and B&M in Foss Islands the following day. On both occasions, Pearson and an accomplice went directly to the detergent aisle and stuffed bottles of fabric conditioner into their clothing and a rucksack before leaving.

The thefts were captured on CCTV, and shop staff alerted North Yorkshire Police. Pearson was arrested on 14 September and later charged with two counts of theft from a shop. He appeared at York Magistrates’ Court on 16 September, where he pleaded guilty and received two consecutive eight-week prison sentences.

Police say enquiries are ongoing into the role of an accomplice.

PC Jonathan Lewis of York Neighbourhood Policing Team said:
“Shoplifting remains a priority for North Yorkshire Police. It is not a victimless crime – it costs businesses millions every year and ultimately impacts customers when prices rise to cover the losses. It won’t be tolerated, and we will do everything we can to bring offenders to justice.”
