Appeal After Racially Aggravated Incident on Hungate Footbridge

North Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses following a racially aggravated public order offence that occurred in York’s Hungate area.

The incident took place at around 11pm on Saturday 12 June 2025, on the Hungate Pedestrian Footbridge, which connects Navigation Road to Palmer Street.

Two males, believed to be aged between 15 and 20, reportedly shouted verbal abuse and racist slurs at a man before following him across the bridge, continuing the harassment.

The ordeal lasted a few minutes before another group of people stepped in and the suspects ran off.

One of the suspects was wearing a black hoodie with the hood up; the other was in a light grey hoodie, also with the hood up.

Police are urging any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
