A York secondary school has been forced to close after being left without a water supply on the first day of the new term.
Millthorpe School was due to reopen to pupils this morning, but has confirmed it will remain closed after discovering the site has no running water.
Parents were informed via a message from the school’s leadership team, which explained that the issue meant the school could not safely open to pupils or staff.
The message said: “Without running water, we are unable to provide a safe environment for pupils and staff. We understand that this closure may cause inconvenience and apologise for the short notice. We did not receive any notification of the problem nor any indication of when it would be resolved.”
The school added that it is continuing to monitor the situation and will update families as soon as further information becomes available regarding when the water supply is expected to be restored.
No indication has yet been given on how long the closure will last, and parents have been advised to await further updates directly from the school.
