York Goes Retro: The Actual Reality Arcade Takes Over Parliament Street This July

Get ready, gamers! York BID is levelling up summer in the city with a completely free and wildly interactive event – The Actual Reality Arcade – landing on Parliament Street this July.

On Saturday 5th July, from 11am to 5pm, the high street will be transformed into a nostalgic playground where you become the player in life-sized versions of iconic arcade games. Forget joysticks – it’s all about jumping, running, whacking, and playing for real!

Step into the action with:

  • Tetris – get stacking with oversized blocks

  • Laser Run – dodge and dash through a giant laser maze

  • Donkey Kong – climb and conquer in a throwback classic

  • Invaders – defend the planet in a live-action showdown

  • Whack – human volunteers = next-level whack-a-mole

  • Breakout – smash it like it’s 1980

  • Marble Run – become part of the puzzle

But it’s not just about the games. Families will also have the chance to meet York’s emergency services, check out real police and fire vehicles, and chat with first responders about how they help keep our city safe.

Carl Alsop, Operations Manager at York BID, said:

“We’re excited to bring The Actual Reality Arcade to life this July. This interactive and immersive event is a fantastic way to draw visitors into the city centre and create a memorable experience for everyone. Enjoy some nostalgic memories while experiencing the thrill of classic arcade games in a totally new way.”

Whether you're a die-hard retro gamer or just looking for a fun family day out, this is one event not to miss.
