York Cares Calls on Local Businesses to Help the City Shine This Christmas

Employee-volunteering charity York Cares is urging businesses across the city to help spread festive kindness by supporting its two major Christmas campaigns.

Employee-volunteering charity York Cares is urging businesses across the city to help spread festive kindness by supporting its two major Christmas campaigns: the Christmas Gift Collection and the upcoming Shimmer and Shine Party on 4 December at the De Grey Rooms.

With more than 4,000 essential items needed by 13 local charities, the Christmas Gift Collection is one of York Cares’ most impactful initiatives. Donations of toiletries, warm clothing, food, toys and thoughtful gifts are distributed to organisations including Door 84, Kyra, The Island and Refugee Action York. For many people supported by these charities, even the smallest gesture can bring comfort, dignity and a sense of belonging during what can be a difficult time of year.

York Cares already works closely with some of York’s biggest employers, such as Aviva, Benenden Healthcare, Hunter Gee Holroyd, Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Nestlé. Now, the charity is appealing for even more businesses to get involved — whether by coordinating donation collections, encouraging staff to contribute, hosting drop-off points or pledging items from the Christmas wish list. All donated items will be distributed before Christmas to ensure they reach local people who need them most.

Businesses can also support the campaign by downloading York Cares’ festive posters to display in workplaces or by making a financial contribution via the Christmas Collections payment link on the charity’s website.

Hannah Corkery, Volunteering Project Officer at York Cares, said:
“Every donation, financial or physical, will be used to purchase or provide items from the wish list, guaranteeing that support is targeted and effective.”

Alongside the gift collection, York Cares is also gearing up for its annual Shimmer and Shine Party, a heart-warming celebration that brings together older and younger neighbours from across York. The event features a barn dance, craft activities, Christmas carols and seasonal treats, all aimed at reducing loneliness and creating festive joy.

Hannah added:
“Social clubs like this one help combat loneliness at a time of year when many people feel most isolated. It’s a lovely event and we hope as many people as possible will come along on 4th December.”
