Pupils at one York primary school now have a magical fairy tale village to enjoy.
Where once there was only an asphalt car park at St George’s RC School in Fishergate there are now seven mystical dwellings - including a Hobbit house - surrounding a giant castle.
Head teacher Dee Statham said the school started fundraising back in 2020 when the decision was made to move the old public car park elsewhere on the grounds and in turn transform the left over space into something special.
Over the the following five years an immense £62,000 was raised through a lot of hard work by the whole school community and everyone in the school had a role to play in coming up with the idea of a fairy tale village.
Mrs Statham said that raising the funds was a real collective effort which brought the school community together during the Covid lockdowns and some of the young fundraisers are now in Years 6 and 7.
Carpenters from Mandx from Snaiton near Scarborough custom made the 'houses' and Pentagon Play built them on site.
Mrs Statham, who spent weekends hand painting stones on some of the buildings, said the children have been involved at every stage with the older Year 6 children now being dubbed guardians of the village.
"Since the village was built, the children have made it into their own enchanted kingdom," said Mrs Stratham.
"Each time we go outside we notice that a new story comes to life and new tales are told.
