Selby Abbey to Host York Beethoven Project’s Sixth Event

Selby Abbey will once again provide the stunning backdrop for the sixth event in the York Beethoven Project, taking place on Saturday 27th September 2025.

The ambitious four-year project is dedicated to performing all of Beethoven’s symphonies across local venues, building towards a landmark performance of the epic Ninth Symphony (Choral) at Selby Abbey in spring 2027 – timed to mark the bicentenary of Beethoven’s death.

This September’s event will focus on Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68, the “Pastoral”, completed in 1808 and famously inspired by Beethoven’s love of the Viennese countryside. Known for its vivid, almost cinematic depictions of nature, the symphony remains one of his few explicitly programmatic works. Beethoven often took long walks outside Vienna to find inspiration, even as he struggled with worsening hearing loss.

The “Pastoral” was originally premiered in Vienna in December 1808 – in the same legendary four-hour concert that also introduced his Fifth Symphony. Fortunately, Selby audiences can look forward to a more compact experience, with the performance expected to last around 45 minutes.

As with previous events in the series, the day will feature an open rehearsal where audiences are welcome to drop in and watch the music taking shape, followed by a complete performance at 4pm. The project continues to bring together a remarkable community of talent, with around 60–64 local musicians taking part.

The performance is informal and completely free to attend, offering a rare opportunity to enjoy Beethoven’s music in one of the region’s most atmospheric venues.
