Over 55 Runners Join Holgate Harriers to Support Safer, More Inclusive Running

Holgate Harriers’ Monday evening run saw an exceptional turnout this week, with more than 55 runners joining the club’s effort to support the national Let’s Lift The Curfew initiative.

The campaign, led by Sport England and This Girl Can and supported by England Athletics, aims to raise awareness of women’s experiences in sport and create safer, more inclusive opportunities for women and girls to be active.

The impressive attendance reflected a strong mix of regular runners and newcomers, highlighting the real demand for supportive, community-led running environments. One first-time participant said:
“It was my first time coming along and I felt really welcomed. The group and the run genuinely feel safe and motivating.”

The initiative has already caught the attention of national media. BBC covered the run this week, and Holgate Harriers have been invited to feature in a live BBC radio interview this coming Monday.

Karl Jukes, Chairman of Holgate Harriers, said:
“Seeing such strong numbers for our Monday run is hugely encouraging. It shows that when opportunities are created and welcoming environments provided, women will turn up.”

Beth Brough added:
“With England Athletics backing the Let’s Lift the Curfew campaign, and Sport England and This Girl Can leading the vision, we believe this model can be replicated across many more clubs and communities.”

Holgate Harriers will continue hosting the inclusive Monday run every week, encouraging runners of all abilities—especially women looking for a safe and welcoming space—to get involved. Additional support sessions and social meet-ups are planned to help build confidence and strengthen community connections.
