Lord Mayor's Commendation Scheme

There are so many incredible people and organisations in York that do outstanding things for our city and it's community.

While their efforts and achievements are recognised by local commercial and media organisations, there is currently no civic recognition for their work.

The Lord Mayor wants to change this and is therefore introducing the 'Lord Mayor's Commendation Scheme' to acknowledge these 'acts of service and kindness'.

This will be an annual award scheme where recipients will be recognised in a reception at the Mansion House.

These awards will be the second-highest recognition receivable for a resident or group within the City of York Council boundary (the highest being the 'Freedom of the City').

Currently, the proposal is for there to be six initial award categories and for the nominations to come from residents around the city.

The proposed categories are as follows:

Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community: This would be open to those who have made a significant contribution to their community.

Education: This would be open to anyone currently involved in education(from pre-school to sixth form) who made a notable contribution to their establishment and had a positive input in the lives of children and young people.

Local Sport: This would be open to anyone involved in local sport, from committed individuals who support and coach community sports teams to those who coach professional sports teams.

Care Sector: This would be open to individuals and groups who are involved in the care sector. Anyone from those who selflessly look after a loved one in their time of need to organisations who have made a remarkable contribution to the quality of life for residents in York can be nominated.

The Lord Mayor's Award: This would be for an individual or group nominated by the Civic Party for their contribution to the work of the current Lord Mayor and predecessors.

How nominations might be conducted:

The Lord Mayor says that, "Nomination forms would be available from the West Offices or via the City of York Council website and would open in January and close at the end of February."

On the judging panel deciding the winners of each category would be the Civic Party, the PA to the Lord Mayor and an officer from Democratic Services.

The Lord Mayor wants his awards to recognise "individuals who highlight all that's good in our city."
