Cornish Bakery Unveils Dramatic Expansion in York’s Coney Street

Cornish Bakery

York’s Coney Street has welcomed a stylish new upgrade today as Cornish Bakery officially opens the doors to its dramatically expanded flagship site, doubling its space and seating to meet growing local and tourist demand.

The popular independent bakery, which has been a staple in York since 2017 with successful spots on Colliergate and Coney Street, has now taken over the former Krispy Kreme unit next door. The result? A beautifully merged, 135-square-metre space with seating expanded from 16 to 66, spread across two light-filled, thoughtfully designed floors.

With its muted tones, pale wood accents, natural planting, and soft lighting, the bakery continues its signature calm and modern aesthetic. Local connection remains key, with a bespoke new artwork created by South West artist William Luz, specially curated to resonate with York’s unique charm.

“The new bakery is more than just an expansion,” said Mat Finch, Managing Director of Cornish Bakery. “It’s a bold investment in York’s vibrant community and visitor scene. We’ve loved being here since 2017, and this is a clear sign of our long-term commitment. We’re offering a bigger, better space that invites people to slow down, sit back, and enjoy good food in comfort.”

The new space caters to all – from solo digital nomads to bustling family lunches – with a variety of banquette-style seating, communal tables, and cosy corners designed to suit every type of guest.

The expanded location serves up Cornish Bakery’s renowned range of award-winning pasties and sausage rolls, famously praised by food critic Giles Coren, alongside daily-baked viennoiseries and cakes. Standout treats include:

  • Twice-Baked Pistachio Croissant – filled with homemade frangipane and pistachio cream

  • Shakshuka Croissant – roasted peppers, sun-dried tomatoes, and cheesy béchamel

  • Raspberry Crème Brûlée Pastry

  • Pastrami Reuben Roll

  • Hazelnut Pain au Chocolat

The reopening comes at a meaningful time, as the team continues work behind the scenes to restore the Colliergate bakery, which remains temporarily closed following a fire earlier this year.

Finch adds: “Colliergate is a big part of our York story. We’re progressing through the necessary steps and are committed to bringing it back to life as soon as possible.”
