Walmgate, the main route out from the city centre towards Hull Road and Grimston Bar, is currently closed between Merchantgate and St Denys Road after a pipe burst on Sunday (April 6).
This is the latest in a string of similar incidents along the road, which is a major bus route in and out of the city centre.
The road is now expected to remain closed for some time for repairs to be carried out.
First York buses are not stopping in Merchantgate, which is also closed, and the company is telling all passengers to board their buses in Piccadilly instead.
Service 10 (towards Stamford Bridge): is now running via Piccadilly, Stonebow, Foss Islands Road, then back to normal at Lawrence Street.
Service U2 (towards University): has been diverted via Coppergate and Clifford Street and Service U1 (towards University) has been diverted via Stonebow, Foss Islands Road onto the normal route at Lawrence Street.
Yorkshire Water and local highways engineers were summoned to the scene and Acomb firefighters pumped the water away.
A huge hole excavated in the carriageway was filled in on Tuesday (April 7), but the road still needs to be resurfaced.
The water caused the tarmac to buckle and break up in Walmgate and was flowing all the way down the road towards Fossgate.
One of the pavements remains open so pedestrians can pass the site barriers with care.
