North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service say that they were called to High Ousegate in the city centre at 7.47pm on Wednesday (April 9) after reports of a fire in the wall cavity of Nando’s.
Nando’s and neighbouring Social8 Lounge, Ate O’Clock and Byron, restaurants were evacuated.
A service spokesman said: “Fire crews from Acomb and York attended the premises after reports of smell of burning and alarms sounding.
“The crews located a fire within the wall cavity of a four storey building.
“The crew tackled the fire externally exposing wood cladding and cutting away to extinguish the fire.
“The fire caused less than 5m2 of fire damage to internal timber structure and external facias. Smoke damage was caused to the ground floor and basement.
“Crews used a variety of equipment whilst on scene including a hose reel jet, small tools, reciprocating saw, positive pressure ventilation fan, lighting and thermal imaging camera.”
