A YORK business has stopped keeping live birds of prey at its city centre site after furious campaigners branded it "cruel".

And bosses say the Goodramgate shop has closed for now as they "reflect and regroup".

As reported by The Press on Saturday, falconry experts Owl Adventures recently opened a shop in Our Lady’s Row Goodramgate – originally intended to be a hands-on experience where people would be able to hold and learn about birds of prey.

The group, which previously held shows in Museum Gardens, moved into the building at the beginning of the month with owner Ryan Stocks saying the site sought to educate people about owls without the concern of poor weather and a reduced risk for bird flu infection.

However, the shop received a backlash in community Facebook groups - with members of the public claiming that keeping owls inside was ‘cruel’ and protests planned outside the shop.

A petition was also launched, which received 2,413 signatures, with the organiser claiming that "owl species, known for their majestic nature, deserve environments that closely mimic their natural habitats".

Now bosses have decided to stop keeping live birds in the shop and close their doors for the time being - possibly opening up a retail shop in the future.
