Jason Daniel Rhodes, 33, claimed he only had a multi-tool on him because he had been using it to fix his bicycle.
But Judge Robin Mairs said he probably had it for “protection in that dangerous trade” of drug dealing.
“You had the weapon with you whilst you were under the influence of either drink or drugs and cycling on the streets of York,” he told Rhodes.
Rhodes, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to carrying a blade in public and was jailed for 55 weeks.
He has nearly 70 previous convictions, including for domestic violence, and was on a community order at the time of the multitool offence. He had previously served prison sentences including one for head-butting a woman as she was holding a baby.
He also had two previous convictions for having weapons in public committed when he was a youth, Leeds Crown Court heard. He is a self-confessed drug dealer.
