As reported by The Press yesterday, several police vehicles and paramedics were on the scene in Albert Street, close to Walmgate, shortly before 11.30am on Thursday (May 8).
The cordon remains in place this morning (May 9) with two officers managing the scene.
The street is currently closed to both traffic and people other than residents, who are able to enter and exit the street.
In a statement yesterday, North Yorkshire Police said that they are investigating a “suspicious death” but have said that they “believe it was an isolated incident with no wider threat to the community”.
A spokesperson for the force added today (May 9): “Police enquiries are ongoing. The 53-year-old man arrested in connection with the investigation remains in custody.”
They have also urged anyone with information about the incident to contact them adding: “Anyone with information about the incident should contact North Yorkshire Police immediately on 101. If you would prefer to remain anonymous, pass it to Crimestoppers on 0800 555
