The most elegant prelude to Christmas? Festive Afternoon Tea at Castle Howard from 18th November – 23rd December 2017
Ten show-stopping delights that provide a festive feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds are the latest creations of the top chefs at Castle Howard, who today revealed their exclusive Christmas Afternoon Tea menu, including flavours from turkey to egg nog.
Having been commended as amongst the best afternoon teas in the country, head chef David Haynes and head pastry chef Vanessa Wade, have created a gift of a menu for this year’s exclusive afternoon teas during Castle Howard’s Christmas opening. Served by a roaring fire in the beautifully decorated Grecian Hall, the evocative menu combines a host of traditional flavours in delicate portions – the ultimate Christmas feast in miniature.
“The perfect afternoon tea offers a host of exquisite flavours and textures, sweet and savoury, combined with a selection of blends of tea – or champagne, if you are feeling a little more indulgent – and that’s exactly what we have created, with a festive twist for our winter visitors,” explains David Haynes. “Each of our four sandwiches is crafted from the best locally sourced ingredients – from turkey to Fountain’s Gold cheese, on bread baked fresh each morning. We’ve also given Castle Howard’s signature sausage roll a Christmas variation, creating a compact slice of deliciously seasoned pork, wrapped in crispy pastry and sprinkled with sunflower seeds.”
Vanessa has turned her focus onto the sweet treats, drawing on years of experience training at the Culinary Institute of America and working under Gordon Ramsey, to incorporate three new treats to the afternoon tea offering. Alongside a slice of Castle Howard’s traditional Christmas cake, diners will enjoy mini mince pies, made with apples from the estate, Chocolate Dacquoise – Vanessa’s interpretation of a classic French cake made with layers of meringue and rich chocolate ganache – and a deliciously seasonal Choux Bun filled with egg nog custard.
“We’ve really gone to town to create ten different afternoon tea elements, each of which captures a different taste of Christmas, and designed to look as wonderful as it tastes, and served in the opulent setting of the Grecian Hall, the whole experience will fill our diners with the festive spirit,” adds Vanessa.
The Festive Afternoon Tea Ticket is £43.95 per person, including admission to ‘Angels on High’, the sumptuous Christmas decorations which adorn the house. Festive Afternoon Tea is served most weekdays throughout the festival opening season (18 November to 23 December), though early booking is recommended as all places sold out last year.
