St Columba's - Six FREE Organ concerts at 12.00 on Saturdays during January and February. The emphasis is definitely on "Concert" and these events are open to all. Admission is free with Tea/Coffee available both before and afterwards. What better way to spend a Saturday lunchtime after a morning shopping in town?
I started these concerts with the initial idea to open up the building to the public and have a concert at the same time. The number of visitors have been most encouraging with many repeat visits by the regular "organ concert goers" York has many regular organ concerts at lunchtime in city-centre venues (St Helens, St Martin's and Central Methodist) during the summer months and I felt that there was a niche here waiting to be filled.......And there was........And I've filled it!
It will be playing for the first 2016 concert on January 9th.... but the star attraction is NIGEL OGDEN who will entertain us on January 16th. He will present a programme of popular and easy listening music in his own style - familiar to many listeners of the BBC radio programme "The Organist Entertains" We round off the series on February 13th with our own York version of the Last Night of the Proms. Organist Simon Lindley from Leeds will include all the usual favourites from the Proms - Rule Britannia, Land of Hope and Glory, Jerusalem.......party poppers, streamers Fancy hats .....the lot!
The star of each and every concert is the Lewis Organ. 107 years old she is, and makes a fabulous noise! Lewis organs were built to last and this one is well worth a visit. St Columba's is a traditional non-conformist chapel with the organ at the front and a gallery round the back and sides. the Victorian interior is warm and inviting and you all get a comfy pew!
