An evening with Andy Broderick at the Inspired by… gallery
Multi-talented artist and musician Andy Broderick will host a special evening of music and conversation at the Inspired by… gallery at The Moors National Park Centre, Danby, North Yorkshire, on Saturday 6 September.
Saltburn-based Andy’s lively watercolours of the animals and birds of the North York Moors National Park can be seen alongside the work of sculptors Emma Stothard, who lives and works in Whitby, and Yorkshire-Dales-based Stef Ottevanger, as part of the exhibition Spirited Wildlife, at the gallery from 20 August to 16 September.
From 7pm on 6 September, Andy will talk about his painting and his interest in wildlife, and perform some of his favourite music on the guitar, accompanied by violinist Ray Legg. Tickets cost £5, to include a glass of wine, and are available on 01439 772738 (advance booking is recommended).
Andy says: “Music was always a presence in my life: I remember when I was young watching my uncle’s family band rehearse at my granny’s house in Ireland. At 20 I moved to England to study fine art at university and began learning to play guitar and sing to help make ends meet by busking. I began writing my own songs about five years ago after becoming interested in learning songs from the Irish Gaelic tradition, trying to interpret them with a sense of inventiveness and a creative approach, and to deliver them with an honesty, intensity and true feeling.”
Ray Legg’s musical education began with classical violin; by 16 he was all-army musician of the year. He went on to play in many bands through the 60s and 70s including his family bluegrass band, Huckleberry Hollow, who played on the main stage at Cambridge Folk Festival. With Andy, he sets his unique violin accompaniment to Andy’s traditional Irish melodies and idiosyncratic style of song writing.
Andy Broderick, Emma Stothard and Stef Ottevanger will also be at the gallery from noon to 3pm on Saturday 23 August for a Meet the Artists event, with music from harpist Elisabeth Westhead for 30 minutes from noon, 1pm and 2pm.
Spirited Wildlife can be seen at the Inspired by… gallery from Wednesday 20 August to Tuesday 16 September, daily from 9.30am to 5.30pm (August) and 10am to 5pm (September). Entry is free.
