This should be a very special and interesting meeting as we have a guest speaker, Alan George, coming to give us a talk entitled Fitzwilliam Encounters. Alan is a founder member of the Fitzwilliam String Quartet and his talk will be about the various composers and musicians the quartet has worked with over the years including Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975). Shostakovich travelled to York in the early 1970s to hear the Fitzwilliam Quartet perform his 13th string quartet. Their recordings of the complete cycle of Shostakovich quartets are still regarded as benchmark performances. Alan is also Music Director of the Academy of St Olave's orchestra here in York.
Meeting venue: Dower Court, William Plows Avenue, Heslington Road, York YO10 5AD
Time: 2.00 - 4.30pm
Anyone is welcome to come. We make a small charge of £3 for visitors.
