36 vibrant floral umbrellas have returned to Coppergate Walk this week to launch its ‘Instagram Summer’, a series of events and photo opportunities that aims to make the Coppergate Centre one of the key city hotspots for visitors wanting fabulous photo opportunities.
The floral umbrellas tie in with another new attraction, coming to the Coppergate Centre later this month, when the students from Askham Bryan College re-assemble their Gold Medal-winning ‘In Sight of the Minster’ show garden at the heart of St Mary’s Square for locals to enjoy as part of this year’s Bloom! Festival. Spring butterflies can also be spotted all around the centre, adding to the colour and floral theme.
“Even in the early evening when we were putting the umbrellas up, many locals and visitors alike were stopping to take photographs of the Brollywalk installation, so we’re looking forward to seeing hundreds of images appearing across social media in the coming months. Last year, we were named by travel website scenicwander.com as one of the best umbrella streets in the world, so we’ll be adding even more colour with a different display of umbrellas each month from now until September – weather permitting,” says centre manager, Pippa Unwin.
Indeed, previous displays have inspired not only photographic tributes, but paintings and sketches from local artists, highlighting the vibrant colours against the stunning backdrop of the lantern tower of All Saints, Pavement. “The view of the umbrellas is always changing, whether in the mid-day sun, at dusk or even in the rain when they stand out against grey sky, and they’re almost hypnotic in the breeze when they sway on the wires,” adds Pippa.
Those sharing photos of the Coppergate displays on social media are requested to use the hashtag #brollywalk, with the best images being shared by the shopping centre’s team.
