York Musical Theatre Company has been busy auditioning for the global phenomenon, Jesus Christ Superstar. On in York from 27 – 30 November, this rock-opera from Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice has been wowing audiences around the world for decades and the Company is excited to be bringing this thrilling show to the York stage.
A musical phenomenon, the show follows the last week of Jesus’ life, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot, and exploring the struggles and personal relationships between his followers and disciples.
“The music hasn't dated, or faded, one crotchet. I still shiver with pleasure”
Reflecting the rock roots that defined a generation, the multi award-winning score includes songs such as Superstar, Everything’s Alright and I Don’t Know How To Love Him. A gritty and touching emotional rollercoaster that will leave you spellbound.
Director Paul Laidlaw and a Creative Team, including Musical Director John Atkin, have pulled together a fantastic cast for the show. Paul spoke about the audition process:
“We were thrilled to have such a great response to auditions, particularly from so many new faces to the Company. We’ve always been proud of the fact that we welcome any new people to join any show that we do and if you’re new, you can walk into lead roles, and that’s what’s happened. Our actors playing Jesus, Judas, Pilate and Mary Magdalene are all new to the Company and it’s really encouraging for to see. The strength in the singing is staggering and is going to sound just fantastic on stage. We really can’t wait to show York audiences all our hard work.”
Music rehearsals are already underway, a challenging task as the show in sung through with a difficult score, enough to test any singer! Floor rehearsals begin from 7 October and the cast are looking forward to getting stuck in to the big task ahead of them.
