Move over Henman Hill – coverage of the world’s most prestigious tennis tournament is coming to the Coppergate Centre this July, with seven hours of BBC Wimbledon coverage live each day on three screens.
The idea came from Andrew Lowson at York BID, who approached the Coppergate team to see if the centre could host the venue. “St Mary’s Square in Coppergate is a great venue for a screening – large enough for a great crowd, and yet nicely enclosed so that spectators can still feel close to the action. Whether people are popping down to watch during their lunch break, spending an afternoon in the city enjoying the fantastic shopping, or relaxing after work, there should be a superb atmosphere,” he says. “After the excitement of the matches, we hope that people will head out into the city for dinner or drinks – a great social occasion.”
Coppergate’s centre manager, Pippa Unwin, is delighted to be partnering with York BID on the project. “We’ve had a beach in Coppergate for the last couple of years, but this year, we thought we’d try out having a lawn. So many people love spending time outdoors in the square each year, enjoying an ice-cream from Scoops, coffee from Carluccio’s or a takeaway strawberry tart from Patisserie Valerie, so we’re really excited to be the best alfresco venue in York for watching Wimbledon this summer for the whole family.”
The team will be working with York-based Digivans North to show the matches. Viewers will be able to watch the drama on Centre Court from deckchairs on the lawn, see players serving aces as they stroll down Coppergate Walk, or watch nerve-shredding match points in the queue at JORVIK Viking Centre, with three screens all showing the matches.
Many of the major stores, including Fenwick, Primark and Top Shop, remain open until 7pm during the summer, for anyone inspired to pick up some new tennis shoes, sportswear or sun hats during any breaks between the matches.
