Up to 24 local charities hope to raise much-needed funds this festive season, by taking advantage of the UK’s largest ‘selfie station’ in the heart of Coppergate.
An empty unit in the city centre shopping mecca will be transformed from Friday 1st December into a first-of-its-kind giant picture postcard photo booth.
Each day during the charity advent, a different North Yorkshire based charity will take over the running of the booth, asking for reasonable donations for festive selfies using a variety of Yuletide props.
The selfie station, which features a giant postcard front and a festive backdrop of the York skyline, has been specially branded with the hashtags #ChrismasElfie #Coppergate #York @ThisIsYO1 so that selfie lovers can post and share direct to their Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts.Money raised by each charity during their festive photo fun day will go direct into their coffers – with a total combined target of £4,000 by Christmas Eve.
Carla Ballantine, a Director at YO1 Radio, who came up with the idea, said: “It was such a shame to see an empty unit creating an eyesore in the middle of one of the city’s busiest shopping areas. So, together with Coppergate’s marketing company Pyper York, we set about creating something fun, festive and with real charity fundraising potential.”
Sarah Child, from the local branch of Macmillan Cancer, one of the charities taking part in the 24 day event added: “The ChristmasElfie booth is a fantastic idea and a great opportunity for local fundraisers to brighten up people’s visit to our city and raise money at the same time.”
Other charities taking part in the campaign include York Mind, York City Knights Foundation and Dementia Yorkshire amongst many others.
