York City Knights Ladies are officially launching their new season on November 13th at 6:30pm at York St John University Sports Park on Haxby Road.
We will give people the chance to see their plans for the future of the Women and Girls’ game in York, and showcase what volunteering opportunities there are available to assist the team and for new players to experience some rugby league.
York were unbeaten in this year’s Summer Merit League and won the Challenge Shield in July in what was their first year playing as part of the York City Knights club. On the back of this successful campaign, the RFL accepted a bid for the team to play in the top tier of the women’s game from next season.
With other teams being entered from Leeds Rhinos, Castleford Tigers, Widnes Vikings, Bradford Bulls, Wigan Warriors, St Helens & Featherstone Rovers the challenge for the Ladies both on and off the pitch will be tremendous , but it is something that York City Knights Ladies coach Daryl North believes presents a fantastic opportunity for not just his team, but the city of York on the whole;
“For York to be playing in Super League is a massive achievement for women’s rugby and sport in general in York. I don’t think the city has any other team competing in the top tier or playing at that level week in week out.”
“I am so pleased we’ve been accepted because I believe the girls need this challenge to progress as players and as a squad. We can learn a lot from playing teams like Bradford and St Helens.”
In preparation for the upcoming season the Ladies are looking to recruit players and are running four open training sessions for players to give it a try. These start on the launch evening, 13th November, and continue for the next four weeks at the home of the Ladies team at York St John University Sports Park, Haxby Road.
Alongside the recruitment of players The Knights Ladies are also looking for volunteers to support the team in a number of ways from first aiders and physios to marketing and promotions.
