It taken over 2 years to refurbish - but its now in even more glory as the Station Hall re - opened on Friday. if, like me, you are a massive fan of the Royal Carriages its time to go back and the best thing it is FREE...The museum has had a massive 11 million pound refurbishment and it looks outstanding. YO1 were invited to go along to the opening day and I couldn't wait to volunteer. All of it was in its splendid style. I was also looking for Laddie to make sure he was there! He was the terrier dog who worked at the station collecting coins in a metal box on his back! He is there (stuffed of course) and you can pop in a coin on the feature. Make sure you go back to see everything or try for the first time. I was there when it opened in 1975 but was only 3!

Live for St Leonards is a yearly event in the town centre and involves lots of Local Bands playing to raise money for St Leonards Hospice. It costs over 8 Million a year to keep the hospice open and every event helps. YO1 again were a massive part of the 9 days hosting the stage at Parliament. I love this event and it has a personal reason for me as they looked after my mum. Everyone involved is just so friendly and there is so much local talent in York and North Yorkshire. The crowds certainly came along and were entertained as well as sampling the amazing street food.

A brand new Musical is out! I was honoured to be invited on press night on the 17th of September.

Military Wives The Musical has been produced in-house at York Theatre Royal. Written by Debbie Isitt it is based on the true story of a choir started by the Wives, Girlfriends and Families of those serving in the Afghanistan war. The show takes you on a journey with the ladies, and how being at home can be hard whilst awaiting news. to keep themselves occupied they start a choir and it just grows! it made me laugh out loud in many places and also cry and need a few tissues. It was so uplifting and all about their sisterhood as well as their relationships. I spoke to Paul Crewes the CEO before it started and he promised all the above. it certainly delivered and the immediate standing ovation from the whole audience on the last note just proved how it had touched everyone in the theatre. I would give it more than 5 stars! The film, based on the same story just didn't go in depth of what life is like for these ladies. The Musical had every emotion and the 2 minute silence was a perfect piece of theatre. Go see this show - you will not be disappointed.

The evening saw over 500 people join in the 7 mile circular walk round York and they raised £45,000.00! Before the walk YO1 provided the entertainment and fun! Starting on the stage was the band Tri- Starrs then the YO1 radio Sparkle Party into Thomas Clubbersize to warm us all up!

I was so happy to do a live broadcast of The Most Music Weekend and dedicate to the hospice, and for those walking and their reasons. The whole evening was so beautiful and it just proved what St Leonard's means to York people and beyond.

Chris's expertise on these led to over £6000 raised alone on the auction! Being a part of something special like this makes me so proud of what I do.

If you go down to Treasurers house today you are sure of a big surprise! The whole house is decorated for the Christmas season. The Joy of it, is that many volunteers come together to make a lot of the decorations and they are so clever and professional. I went along to meet Rebecca - the Visitor Experience Manager, and got a full history lesson as I asked all the right questions! (plus I just love history and imaging myself in the era!)

What a beautiful house, gardens and cafe! I have been before but never caught the history of it and really thankful that the Frank Green decided to give the house and all its contents to the National Trust - everything was kept right down to the furniture and ornaments. it means you are stepping into Downton Abbey. Each room, this year, is decorated to represent a journey of the Edward Greens life. An inventor of The Greens Fuel Economiser, which is still used today. He spent many years travelling the world because of this and had adventures along the way. This is where my mate the bear comes in and its a great story ...... I'm not telling you! go see it.

Everyone was really up for it and we then put these out throughout the day on our shows! I felt like Challenge Anneka! (remember that?)

Back at the studio all the money was counted, the auction ended and we raised a total of £2,244.95! The Lord Mayor came in to thank everyone and the party atmosphere continued on. What a privilege to be involved in such a worthy day.

Friday the 10th of November YO1 Radio were invited to join others for the Press Day at Castle Howard. This was for their new event 'Christmas In Neverland' and was truly magical from start to finish. Yes this years theme is all about the adventures of Peter Pan and is a fairy tale journey through the book, using all the rooms in the stately home! I am going to admit now, I cried and had goose bumps. Not because I was sad - just the magic of it all was amazing. Taking time out of the stresses of the day and visiting here, you feel like a carefree child again. Everyone knows the story and we followed Tinkerbell through the most beautiful decorated splendour. There is so much attention to detail with images, background noises and effects added this year. going round I was a little star struck too! Our group was taken round by Charlotte Lloyd Webber, her company put in all of the designs and make the magic - plus her Father- In -Law is one of my favourite composers EVER! Also you can visit their marquee for delicious food - hot and cold options or just a cuppa. In this. is also, a cracking Christmas Gift Shop - how I would love to be the retail manager of that - it was like being in an adult grotto! Massive thank you to Castle Howard Estate for letting us do our broadcasting from there and for all the interviews. Please visit their website to find out more, you wont be disappointed: Castle Howard House and Gardens - A Place Like No Other

On Tuesday last week, I was invited to an evening of awareness and a thank you for helping The 3 Bears Foundation. Co Founder Mark Burn put together a lovely event for his supporters with the added bonus of finding more about Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms and how research is now looking, finding out sooner that this hidden cancer is there. With a talk from Dr Peter Boxall from York Hospital and then chatting to a Researcher at York St John University, I felt that people are taking this subject seriously and are working towards a way of finding out in the early stages. The three year project hopefully will bring answers we are all looking for. What can you do? Share the symptoms far and wide and talk about it. The first line is the patient and more awareness will mean that people to seek help.

Top music (of course) supplied by Chris Marsden and fun and games (prizes gratefully received from the sponsors) I've never heard such enthusiastic scouts! The whole event is so well organised with loads of stalls - Food, drinks and sparkly things. A huge bonfire and 20 minutes display of top notch fireworks. The evening was all about raising founds for their Out Of Space Project and I can't wait to find out how much they raised.

Yesterday was so exciting over at The YO1 Radio studios as we have a visit from Elvis and his family! Yes Elvis was in the building! and he was just gorgeous. Black Labrador Elvis is Eli's support dog who graduated in May this year and has already saved Eli's life in more ways than one. He stopped Eli going in front of a car and also quoting Eli " He is the best friend ever I don't know what I would do without him". Rebecca spoke to me briefly, before their interview live with Jonathan Cowap, and explained just how much Elvis helps everyone in the family and especially Eli's Autism. When he has his harness on he knows he's a working support dog - once off he's a fantastic pet for Eli and his two brothers too. So Super Heroes wear harnesses too!

The main thing I want to get across from this, is to highlight the Support Dogs charity as it may be something you might want to consider and not realised it was there. Or maybe you want to find out more on how to help them. supportdogs.org.uk

With Autism, situations can be very overwhelming and scary - it can cause stress and feeling uncomfortable. Having a support dog means they are everything to these children. They are comforted and helped by these animals. Having a dog myself, I totally understand what a pet can mean to your life. Well Done Elvis and thank you to Rebecca and Eli for coming in to talk to us.

Wondering what to do on a Monday in the half term holidays, I contacted my friend Pam to go along and visit her and her charity (and lifelong passion) New Beginnings Horses. Pam and her husband have been running this for 13 years and it is for the love of the horses that they are able to help. The horses come from all backgrounds in the racing world. Some have retired, some are much younger and weren't fast enough, some have an injury and may be able to race again after respite and care, this list is endless and no horse is turned away. Many of the horses are retrained to be family home horses and can go out on loan to someone who will give them love and care.

Henry and I absolutely loved the whole day. from the 8 cats and 4 dogs, 2 ponies and 36 horses - they were all super friendly and gorgeous. The charity has embassador horses, who also give back to community. They go out to events and my favourite of these are to go to a hospice to see the patients. Remi is a retired race horse who, in his day, won a lot of money. He has been trained to do these visits along with Poppy the pony. I saw this first hand at St Leonards Hospice. They are such gentle souls. Going around saying hi to all of them I found myself so happy and smiled all the way round. There is something about a horse that just makes you feel calm.

Would you like to become a friend of New Beginnings Horses? DO IT! nbhorses.org.uk

Every Sunday, the Hoping Street Kitchen set up a pop up restaurant in the grounds of Kings Manor in York. This charity works so hard to feed the homeless and those who simply cannot afford food in these hard times. Helen and Jayne are two fantastic and dedicated ladies, who get chefs and cooks to make superb menus each week. Everyone involved does this for free so it is only the ingredients that they need funds for. It means that every week there are so many options of meals and of course beautiful puddings (lovely and warming for winter)

I went along on Sunday to help out - the session is 2.30pm - 4pm (in all weathers) and wasn't sure what to expect. The whole experience, however was so humbling and joyful. Everyone came from all walks of life, no one is judged and everyone has a listening ear if its needed. I was on the Food Bank table (items kindly donated by Farmfoods) and was able to hand out essentials as well as chocolate bars as a treat. People were so polite and grateful and it was set out so they could chose, rather than just given items. The same is for the food tables - with options and a menu (everything made from scratch and nutrients galore) Its giving people a choice and a feeling like they belong that got me the most. Many circumstances have left people without homes and not much money, however its good to see that they are treated like anyone else at Hoping Street Kitchen. The group also have information from all charities in York if they see someone in need. They hand this out and also chat. What a brilliant service they provide. I left thinking why can't the world do more, but glad people like Helen, Jayne and their volunteers are around. They are always looking for chefs, cooks and volunteers - you can get in touch by emailing: jayne.venables@outlook.com

You don't have to do every week - just make a difference when you can.

Last night saw the celebration of the Ladies York Rugby Valkyries. Yes, these brilliant ladies have won the Super League and now its time to celebrate! They deserve every moment and the joy in their faces said it all. The crowds were cheering . It just made everyone feel so proud. They also have their awards ceremony and party on Saturday too - I am sure the atmosphere of that one will be top notch!

I went along to cheer them on and also get some super fan interviews, what a lovely group of people. My favourite interview was with Liv Woods grandparents, who couldn't be more prouder if they tried. Liv also plays for England. I got goose bumps just chatting to them - to watch with over 4000 other people for the actual match knowing their grand daughter was a part of this York history is the best gift ever!

I Wish them all Good Luck for the 2024 Season - We have also had the pleasure of talking to manager Lindsay Anfield and Wayne spoke to the owner Clint Goodchild. Dedicated and professional yet friendly people, I hope champagne was flowing!

Seeing someone saved with CPR this summer, I was really aware that I hadn't looked at how to do it for a long while. I contacted my dear friend Perri Ann Barley who works as an ambulance dispatcher and asked for advice. It just so happened that she was producing a video all about it and visiting schools on the 16th of October for "Re-start a heart day". Through Perri I got permission to join the students and learn on the day.

On the day they also had a guest - Alex Cowes - a former pupil at the school who actually needed CPR 8 years ago whilst in PE and was saved by Shona Jagger, his teacher. He explained at each session how important the next 30 minutes of learning would be. Craig Barley, then gave the best talk to the students - so concise, clear and real. It is true that a person is known as dead until the CPR is working and this was explained with no hiding of the truth. The thing that got me was how quick it was to pick up and know what to do - I urge everyone to watch a video on how to do this. 3 out of 4 cases are in the home. Go to You Tube or Google or anywhere and watch!

On Saturday the 14th of October I was invited to go along to St Nicks nature reserve Autumn Fayre. They not only manage 24 acres at their main site, they now have all the green corridors to protect. For the last few years, they have had a fayre to help raise funds and awareness of the environment and how we can use nature to our advantage. The whole day was brilliant and enjoyed by all ages! there were stalls from St Nicks volunteers and also local groups who also are looking at things sustainable. Taking my son, niece and Monty dog (11,18 and 3!) we explored everything we could and joined in with all the activities. Food was supplied in the form of a bean stew with everything foraged - it was delicious - pickles, pesto and Chilis added so much flavour :-). Having a drink after we sampled the absolutely yummy apple juice, pressed and given straight from the barrel. later we got pear and apple too! all was just for a donation. It all tasted so much better than shop bought. Time then for a trip round the stalls and to join in! from hoopla, splat the rat, make a wooden bicycle pen holder, chase the bugs, Electricity quiz, making a solar panelled light out of a jam jar and gorgeous wreath making too. Henry said it was brilliant and whilst having fun he learnt so much in a day! In a world of electronics, mon cons and talking things for granted, it was a perfect way of getting back to nature. We all slept well that night! I cannot wait for next years.

in the meantime you can get involved by calling 01904 441821 or email info@stnicks.org.uk They have various opportunities for volunteering and are super friendly. You can help save the water voles and tansy beetle too.

Whilst doing my features on the over 50s Festival I found a fantastic space and group of people at St Sampson's Centre. The Centre is a place of warmth to sit quietly with a well earned cuppa, or to meet and socialise new friends. (There's a lovely seating area called "place to chat") I got to talk to so many people in there and it was full of wonderful characters of York. The Centre offers lots of activities, as well as a cafe. it is full of fabulous food at a really reasonable cost. I had a fantastic corned beef and beetroot sandwich - took me back to my grannies kitchen. The centre is run by volunteers and every one was so dedicated and really happy to be there. Brian at the front of the photograph has been helping 19 years and he is superstar who gets as much out of the centre as those popping in for a cuppa.

Last week was a full on fitness week for me - all were part of the Over 50s Festival in York - organised by Mary Cotton. looking through the brochure i saw a theme of Well-Being and joining groups of people to have fun. Looking at my diary, I filled in eagerly the events, I wanted to join!

Walking Football was my first venture! This, I never had heard of, but I was greeted by Amy as if an old friend. All the footballers were there ready to go and talking to all of them, I got the feeling this wasn't just for the game but also company, fresh air and the cuppa afterwards (plus a little fun rivalry!) So, the aim of the game is to walk not run whilst playing. Not as easy as you would think, your brain tells you to run to a ball, but this is walking so anyone can join in. (when I say walking its like those long distance professional walkers for some) Everything about it is about fun though and everyone got on so well. I heard "WALK" a few times! Person of the match for me was Rosie - she was a dark horse with plenty of moves too! Talking afterwards she said it keeps her and her mind active. I could see that all of the participants were of similar ilk and the cuppa and chat afterwards was the main "goal" for me.

Want to join in? its every Monday and Thursday at Burnholme Community Centre 10am - 11am or Wednesday at Huntington Secondary School at 6pm - 7pm. The cost is £5 per session but you do get a card giving you a free session too. Contact Amy on 07834 588259 or email Amy on inclusion@yorkcityfoundation.co.uk

The evening of the Thursday the 14th of September was the 10th anniversary of Big Ians' Concert " A Night to Remember". I confess I have never been to one so was really excited. Especially as my friend Beth McCarthy was singing. I have known Beth since she was about 6 years old when I directed her in panto (a while ago!) The show appealed to me because it is all for local charities. Wow what a show it was! so much talent on one stage - including "Hands and Voices" a music group who includes everyone, York Music Forum musicians - young talent grown through confidence and superb! There was a plentiful collection of singers and musicians including the best violinist I have heard - I bet he's a hit in pubs! The vocals of Jess Steel, Heather Findlay and Annie Donaghy were outstanding and fun to sing and dance along to. Beth sang "Nothing Compares to You" so beautiful and I had tears throughout. Ian Donaghy puts all of this together (with Musical Director George Hall) and his passion for charities is at the for front of this. As the front man of the band Huge, he is such an amazing host and had the audience from the word go. I cannot wait to find out the full total raised and get a ticket for next year as soon as they come out!

Do you want to help Ian with his charity causes? Contact him on info@bigian.co.uk his next venture is Xmas Presence.

Last Thursday I went along to a fabulous rehearsal of The Shepherd Group Concert Band. The group are doing a concert to raise money for York Against Cancer on the 29th of September at the Salvation Army Citadel in Gillygate. If the rehearsal is anything to go by, you are in for a treat! This 35 strong band will also be with the Senior Band - over 70 players in total on the evening. From classics to pop this band goes from strength to strength and I had goose bumps al the way through! I loved it all, especially the big band numbers - though Baggy Trousers and Shut up and Dance made me jiggle along too! The sheer volume brought tears of joy - I just can't explain it!

The evening will be so uplifting - music evokes that in us - it is so good for the soul. The concert is in memory of Grace Pratt, a founder member of the Rowntree Brass Band (as it was originally). Grace was a cornet player and conductor Mike Pratts Mum. Mike said " The whole band wanted to do something fitting for Grace and the best way is a tribute to her with all the songs dear to her heart. York Against Cancer was also her favourite charity, so we are raising money for them."

I will be there and hope to see you! Tickets are £7.50 per person on the door or through their website Grace Pratt Memorial Concert – Shepherd Group Brass Band it all starts at 7.30pm and believe me it will be the best start to your weekend. York Breast Friends and York Against Cancer have got together and organised a Well- Being Choir. No fees, free parking, free refreshments and a lot of smiley faces. Why wouldn't you? From 10.30am we had a cuppa and a chat before joining in 11am - 12 in a singing class. It was so relaxed and at any level - I am a firm believer anyone can sing and it can be a complete mood enhancer. i loved singing the sea shanties and Bring Me Sunshine! Around 25 of us had a great hour and any anxiety went out of the window! The Leveson Centre now has various therapies and classes on offer - from exercise to Nordic walking or why not try walking football with York City FC Foundation!

Wow meeting Lauren from Accessible Arts and Media has totally fired up my belly! What a fantastic charity looking after anyone who wants to be involved with music for well- being. We all know how much effect a song can make on memories and can help your feelings - its in your soul. Add a charity with no boundries and a dedicated team tailoring individual needs and you have a very special space. Along with the "Hands and Voices" Choir there is also the "Movers and Shakers" music class. All open to ages 18 and upwards. Not only that they also have IMUSE which is a non clinical treatment programme where, on a 1 -1 basis, the client can choose to what they want from session - visuals, music, Kenetic technology and all with their anxiety and well being in mind. These are pre-booked only and take place on a Wednesday at New Earswick.

Would you like to get in touch with the Lauren and the team? The are always open to new members and also looking for volunteers to help out on the choir and movers.

A trip to a Family Fun Day at The Poppleton Centre led to me having a lesson in garden bowls! Yes I have 10 pinned before and a bit of French Boules, but this is in a league of its own and not as easy as these guys make it! You need a good eye on the ball and a way of bowling long and straight. Being left handed, my attempt swung off to the right as I curve, my second bounced as if I was throwing a tennis ball and my third was a success (or fluke?) put it this way a 6 year old beat me! The activity was all part of the fun day and scarecrow hunt in the village. Everyone I saw there were really enjoying it all and making the most of the sunshine too.

Now onto the important stuff - The "Out Of Space Project" is raising funds to develop The Community Centre which is at the heart of Poppleton. The project is to extend their facilities for all the local groups to be able to enjoy the centre. They also want better areas with lift access. They have Charity status and are fundraising as much as they can to make this possible. If you would like to know more you can get in touch with centre manager Beth Kirkham on 01904 797478 or at info@poppletoncentre.org.uk

On Friday the 8th of September I popped in Tesco! not just for my meal deal (other supermarkets are available!) but also to meet the lovely community champion, Jacqueline. Sitting with our cup of tea we put the world to rights and discovered Jacquelines passion for her charity work. At the door there are items you can buy for a Food Bank - simply take in a bag to the till and pay with your shopping or you can add a item or 2 to the basket on your way out. There is also a bright noticeboard displaying local events for charity and a container for the RSPCA food and also The Hygiene Bank. I suppose as Tesco says - Every Little Helps. Now onto my main reason for visiting. The little blue tokens! Yes the ones you get given with your shopping at the tills. These are then for you to place in one of three charities or non profit organisations to see who can get the most blue tokens. All 3 slots do get something too! £500/£1000/£1500 depending on who gets most tokens. Tescos are now calling this "Stronger Starts" and at least 2 of the 3 boxes will be for childrens' causes Whether its a local charity, Grassroots, CIC or a Non Profit Organisation, all count. It turns around on a 3 month basis. and yes Jacqueline counts them all! to apply its Apply for a grant – Tesco Stronger Starts

Also if you would like a donation or raffle prize for any local events - contact Jacqueline on 3480@tesco.com

Saturday night was my first evening event for YO1 Radio on what has to be the hottest day of the year! That didn't stop people flocking in to the concert room of Haxby Sports Bar (air conditioned) Billed as a Charity Night for The Snappy Trust, with a brilliant band entertaining, fun games plus pie and peas supper, what more can you ask for! The venue is old stomping ground for me and each year, I go back to be an elf at their Christmas Party. It felt like a pair of comfy old slippers and everyone was so welcoming (and generous when I went around with raffle tickets)

Well what a night! Chris Marsden was DJ and host - keeping Ron Wathey on his toes, having fun with the games. Zakk Taylor and The Rat Race headlined and were superb! I've never seen them before but believe me these guy are up and coming and, along with most, I danced the whole set! Even Snappy danced :-) The pies were homemade by the butcher next door and the raffle and auction just spoke for themselves as the amount raised was £1,942.00. YES in one night! We know how to party! Thank you to all the staff at Haxby Sports Bar.
